    Dear Elizabeth,
Hi, I was referred to you by Marina Bhargava- she is helping me to apply for a board position on the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce (GAACC). In our discussion, she mentioned that I should meet you because of your leadership in the Vietnamese community. I am impressed with this site and grateful for the activities that VACAT sponsors.

I have been in Austin since 1984 and my family (Bac Si Thanh Tam Nguyen, formerly at Town North Medical Clinic) has been involved in Vietnamese events since then. I often volunteer (Austin Chamber of Commerce, SXSW, door64…) and would like to offer some time towards VACAT.

Please contact me for a discussion on how I may participate.

    Looking forward to your response,
    Thien Nguyen

    Dear VCAT officers,
My name is Jennifer Huang and I’m on the User Operations team at Facebook’s Austin office, as well as a former UT alum. I received your information from the UT website for VSA. I am writing to ask if your organization would be able to help me with a research project that would involve students or faculty meeting with me either 1:1 with me or participating in a focus group to discuss Southeast Asian language syntax and culture.

In User Operations we respond to problems users face on the site. These issues are sometimes related to the way people from different cultures interact on site and the nuances behind their languages. One of the languages we want to learn more about is Vietnamese and the way native speakers express themselves online.

If this is something your organization would be interested in, please consider passing on this email to people who are native Vietnamese speakers. They will need to respond to me by Monday, May 13th. Participants of these 1:1s or group discussions will be required to spend no more than one hour of time with us and will be reimbursed with at $75 Amazon gift card. Please direct these people to email me at with their name, what language they speak and their degree of language proficiency, and a day of the week of May 13-17 that they would be available.

If you have any further questions, I would also be happy to discuss this more via email ( or phone (512.680.6951).

Thanks in advance for your time, and I look forward to having the opportunity to work with your department.

    Jennifer Huang

Hi, I’m curious about your Vietnamese language classes… can I take them if I don’t know know any Vietnamese at all or do I need to know at least a little? Also, how many weeks does the class last and how often do y’all have classes?

  4. An Nguyen says:

I am a UT student and I wanted to know if there was anyone in the community that I could interview for my assignment. I would like to interview someone who fought in the Vietnam war or lived through it. If you could please contact me back soon I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you for your time.

My dad is senior citizen with limited English. He is trying to learn how to do basic computer skills like surfing and email.

Do you offer any course or advise or help for him? I think somehow enable Vietnamese fonts on the Windows OS would be helpful as well.

      Hello David,
The new VACAT board has recently taken over the new responsibilities and are working on offering the computer classes again. We will be announcing on VACAT website and in the Bao Tre Magazine soon. In the mean time, there are many other programs and services that we are hoping to provide to our community. If you have a couple of hours for volunteering work, please let me know. I will invite you to our board meeting so that you know what you can contribute to our community.
