The Vietnamese American Community of Austin, Texas (VACAT) is a 501c(3) non-profit and community-based organization founded in August 1997. The leadership is elected through a popular election process, which is open to the entire Vietnamese community of Austin and vicinity every two years. The organization has the recognition of other Vietnamese communities in the US and the support of all local Vietnamese community organizations and many Vietnamese Americans in central Texas. The National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE), Greater Austin Chapter awarded VACAT, together with AMD and HEB, the 1999 Philanthropic Organization of The Year.
Since the forming of our organization in 1997, we have performed many activities in different areas, such as cultural preservation, education, job training, charity events, crime prevention, etc. In the last 15 years, we organized the Vietnamese Lunar New Year – TET - celebrations, in which attendance exceeded two thousands. Part of our efforts to preserve Vietnamese culture in younger generations, we organized Full-moon festival for children and teach them Vietnamese language. We also had several town hall meetings with the Immigration and Refugee Task Force to educate Vietnamese Americans on issues related to immigration laws. To help people in local Vietnamese community find jobs, we organized free computer training classes, ELS classes and Citizenship training classes, etc.
Besides making efforts to help Vietnamese Americans within our own community, we have also built a bridge between the Vietnamese American community and the greater Austin community. Five times in the past, we organized our Inter-Community Charity Balls to raise funds for non-profit organizations, such as American Red Cross, Children Hospital, Salvation Army, Catholic Charity, Negro College Funds, Vietnamese Senior Association, Vietnamese Bilangual program, etc. When disasters happened, we organized the Walk-a-Thon to raise funds for victims of natural disasters in Central America and Vietnam. During Holidays, we had volunteers serving food to the homeless in downtown Austin. Especially, we had several town hall meetings with the Travis County Sheriff Office and the Austin Police Department on Asian crime awareness. VACAT was also an active partner of Census 2000 and 2010, and we were selected to receive the Get Out the Votes Mini Grant award by Boat People S.O.S. VACAT has also participated in welcoming home our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan at Fort Hood, Temple, TX.
